FTP is not the only method to upload by the way for this type of website management, your site provider could have PHP tools that allow you to upload a file to a certain directory aswell [however it isnt as snazzy really]

Yep. SSH is only needed if you would like to use more advanced commands which are not possible via FTP. Usually you need SSH to manage a webserver or just for the Linux Console .
