While it is perhaps unlikely that Blizzard will be foolish enough to allow a duping mechanism through the net when they are testing their game, it is certainly a possibility. In many other MMORPGs players have capitalised massively on such dupes, resulting not only in devaluation of items, but in some cases amazing riches being gained, and in other cases, a lot of a player’s wealth being lost.
We can see a prime example of how duping can affect an MMORPG simply by looking back to Diablo 2. At one point, Stones of Jordan (SoJs) were a very valuable unique item and were the currency of the game along with Ists (since gold was so easy to get it became practically worthless). However, many SoJs were successfully duped thanks to a loophole, and as a result their worth plummeted. They still are often traded as currency today, though they do not retain the value they once did.
Clearly the impact on the economy of a game that duping can have is immense. Although it would be nice to discover a dupe in Diablo 3 for yourself, it would be devastating if someone else found a dupe that caused you to lose an awful lot of net-worth. It is a double-edged sword. With the experience Blizzard will have gained from their recent adventures with World of Warcraft, the probability of duping happening in Diablo 3 is probably miniscule.
Got any thoughts and opinions on duping to share? Do you think there will be any duping in Diablo 3? And, relating to gold being almost completely worthless in Diablo 2, do you think this will have been sorted out in Diablo 3?
