| I respect Blizzard’s strategy in keeping the game release date secret for the time being. The problem they face is that in most games, unforeseeable problems arise close to the release date, resulting in delays that could not possibly have been predicted. This in turn results in gamers becoming riled up with the company, and a lot of stress being caused when it could have been avoided had the company declined to give a date of release. As such, I can really understand Blizzard’s lack of information concerning the release of Diablo 3. Not only is it creating more interest from players wondering when it will be released, but also, Blizzard are covering their own backs from hardcore gamers who would be very annoyed and troublesome if the game for some reason is not released when Blizzard said it would be.
However, if a release date is given for a game, this increases gamers’ hype and excitement often for months beforehand. What better feeling than knowing a game you really love is going to be released just in time for Christmas, say? This anticipation can improve sales when the game is eventually released. Blizzard most likely have weighed up the pros and cons of each, and it would seem that they think by holding off giving the release date they can get the best from both of the above; they can be quite certain that the game will be released on time, but also they can be fairly certain that the game will receive a fair bit of hype and excitement if they give the release date say, a month or two before release. |
