If you are having difficulties with the PS3 online play, like connecting to other players you most likely did not open/forward your ports yet. I noticed this when playing Fifa 2010.

This is really simple, you need to open the following TCP ports:

80

443

5223

...and the following UDP ports:

3478

347

For more information you might also want to check the official PS3 documentary showing you more information about network settings.

Unsure how to forward/open ports on your router?
It's really easy, check Portforward.com and browse for a guide for your router.

Using a media server you can easily stream movies to your Playstation 3 from your network. You could also use the media server to copy files from your local computer to the Playstation 3. With the Media Server you can turn your PS3 into a full home entertainment system.

The software I can recommend you to use is based on Java and thus compatible with all systems with JRE installed. Have a look here.

It's quite simple.

Download the software

Install the software

Follow the on-screen instructions

Share the folders you want to view on your PS3

Start up your PS3

Go to videos, Search for Media servers

Select your Media server.

Either stream or copy the files you want.

That's it :-)

Enjoy :-). The best thing: This is 100% free.
