They usually host their own site, often on the same server that they would be selling you space on (if they also do hosting), or, they rent server space.

So, If I wanted to make a website could I use my home computer as a server for it and have a free domain or is it more complicated than that?

No, it's WAY more complicated than that.
If you want to host a webserver on your computer then you must have a REALLY indepth understanding of web administration. Besides, it requires damn good specs.
If you want a website, you need to pick a host, pick a package etc, buy a domain and code your website.
Take a look at this if you're interested.

My webhost recommendation would be 1and1 if you want a shared host.
