    it was the catalyzer, the unburnt fuel from the faulty coil burnt up with the remaining O2 in the catalyzer, rendering it useless. We cut it off and the "combs" already came falling out. We cut it open, removed the contents (hahaha) and welded it back in. Even more performance than with a working catalyzer now. And obviously it's much louder. Just gotta get a new catalyzer for the next vehicle inspection next year. And hide from the cops.

    Hi m9,

    so I pushed the engine hard for a good while today, it ran 300km since the coil change. Everything was cool, performance was great, I only noticed a slightly stronger stuttering idle in the 4th and 5th gear.
    Half an hour ago, all of a sudden, I've had a decrease in performance and it didn't go away. It's not as weak as it was with only 3 cylinders before the coil change, but there's definitely no 74kW available.

    I'm clueless... could be so many things. air mass sensor, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter... it's dark outside so I haven't looked at the engine yet. For all I know there might just be a vacuum tube that slipped off somewhere...

    Any ideas?

    Well, once the problem appeared and I looked at the error code, I obviously started with the least expensive, spark plugs. Then checked the ignition wires and then I changed the coil.
    Anyways, for now, Im happy this piece of shit car is gonna run for at least another winter. Its only got 100000km on the clock but still, I bought it for 2 grand and I dont feel like investing too much hahah

    No, no. It hasnt reappeared since the coil change. Engine is running flawlessly. Ive only driven it for like 20km since the change though. I was just asking what you meant by making sure it was the coil, since I think I checked every other possible cause before changing it.
    Its a 2001 Ford Focus 1.6 16V. My winter car =D

    Welp, I changed the spark plugs and checked all cables before changing the coil. What else could it be? If it was the ECU, it would show cylinder 2 and 3 as an error code, because they are on the same thingy in the ECU.
