map protection methods

    map protection methods

    Hi Guys,

    I'd like to know what different methods there are to protect a map from getting opened with a mpq editor. I found a map Im not capable of opening.

    It has a damaged MPQ header. You need to fix the header yourself with a hex editor. Maybe try googling for common ways to damage the MPQ header, and reverse it.

    Thank you for answering but I googled the common ways and I am not a noob in working with hex editors.

    I know the normal header is 4D 50 51 1A 20 00 00 00 and the maps header is 4D 50 51 1C 20 00 00.
    But even when changing the 1C to 1A it doesnt work..

    You need to rebuild the MPQArchive..

    Ok thanks I might try this, though this does not show me how to protect the map..

    Oww, you want to protect the map. My bad.
    There are 3 types of protection
    1) Make it un-openable by world editors
    2) Make it un-openable by MPQEditors (most)
    3) Built-In Anti-Cheats

    You can use any of those and mix between them. DotA for example has both 1 and 3.
    What type of protection you want?

    If you want to make the map unopenable using MOST MPQEditors, or in other words, corrupt the MPQArchive. I recommend using spazzlar. Spazzler -- WC3 Map Corruptor : Useful Tools
    But as the video-guide I posted explains, it can be bypassed, but its a bit tricky and it keeps most noobs away.

    The anti-cheats is where it gets interesting, alot of people give up after their first try of cheating a map, as happened to maps like DotA, NotD, YouTD and other maps. But you need some skills around jass - the code language of the world editor - to understand what you are doing.
    But again, it can be countered, anti-cheats can be spotted and deleted (thats why the maps I mentioned above are cheated)
    So if Ill post here guides on how to protect your map that way, it will be useless as everyone can just see it and delete those anti-cheats.

    The third example is by far the best in my opinion, and a good example for that is Power Towers. If you edit the map, it can be openable using World-Editor and any MPQEditor, but if you edit it, then the game gives you a message that the map is edited and might be cheated. It could instead of that just crash the game in alot of nasty ways, but its only informing you.
